The tools inside BreakFree are built on the following established principles:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) Principles
CBT is one of the most extensively researched frameworks in behavioral science. BreakFree uses CBT-informed thought-reframing structures to help users identify distorted thinking patterns and replace them with more accurate, useful perspectives. BreakFree is not a CBT provider and does not deliver CBT treatment.
Grounding Techniques
Grounding exercises (including the 5-4-3-2-1 sensory technique) are evidence-informed practices used to interrupt dissociation and anxiety by anchoring attention to present sensory experience. These are widely used in occupational therapy and wellness education contexts.
Controlled Breathing
Box breathing and diaphragmatic breathing activate the parasympathetic nervous system response, helping reduce physiological arousal during stress. These techniques are scientifically supported as wellness interventions.
Graduated Exposure Principles
The Exposure Builder is informed by the science of behavioral exposure — the systematic, gradual approach to reducing avoidance behavior and fear response by controlled, incremental engagement with avoided stimuli. BreakFree’s Exposure Builder is a non-clinical wellness adaptation, not formal exposure therapy.
Behavioral Habit Design
Daily Reset Plans are structured around habit-formation science — specifically, the role of consistent cue-routine-reward cycles in building durable mental patterns.

How We Built the AI Reset Coach
The AI Reset Coach inside BreakFree uses structured prompts and guided frameworks — not freeform AI conversation. It is designed to apply evidence-informed question patterns that facilitate structured self-reflection, not to diagnose, advise, or treat.
It does not store conversations in a way that is personally identifiable. It does not share your responses with third parties. It escalates to crisis resources when responses indicate acute distress.
